Recapping this week’s DJH

Mindsets for Success

Create First Thing

90% of people check their phones as soon as they wake up in the morning….. Once you get scrolling on social or checking texts, you scramble your attention and likely set the tone for the day that is reactive, not proactive.

What if instead, you created something first thing in the morning?

What Do You Want Instead?

It’s fine to know what you don’t want….but what do you want instead?

You need to see in your mind’s eye what you DO want.

  • DO want to work at a certain company
  • DO want $100,000 salary
  • DO want to live in Arizona

The images and thoughts in your mind will fuel your subconscious to start taking action.

Get clear. Act daily.

Quote of the Week

“Success isn’t always about greatness. It’s about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come.”
— Dwayne Johnson

The Comfort Zone

The comfort zone is underrated.

But the reason it’s underrated is completely legit.

Most people hang out in it all the time. So thought leaders, authors, and influencers are constantly seeking to alert people to grow and leave the comfort zone.

Again, completely legit. You’re probably in your comfort zone more than is in your self-interest.

You bask in habits and practices that you’re accustomed to, and avoid stretching yourself.

So you might miss out on growth, and becoming you were meant to become.

Then why is the comfort zone underrated? Good question.

Because it’s healthy to acknowledge the human need for comfort, and to treat yourself with compassion.

Yeah, as much as hard-nosers like Jocko Willink or Dwayne Johnson (this week’s quote of the week!) have tons of value to offer about work ethic and pushing yourself, if this advice is left unexamined, it can lead people to beat themselves up and burn themselves out.

Indeed, over-harping on “pushing yourself” can lead to the re-enactment of the voices of any authoritarian teachers and parents you had growing up. Obey obey obey!

Obedience isn’t a way to feed your growth. Self-connection, self-compassion, and self-determination are.

What you need is a long-term approach to growth.

Which includes the comfort zone!

Don’t misread me. I’m not giving you a permission slip to eat Twinkies every day and avoid hard things.

Actually I’m rejecting the idea of giving out permission slips. I’m not running your life, you are.

You need to take radical self-responsibility to get your needs met, which includes both comfort and challenge.

Both comfort and challenge are essential human needs. It’s key to have times in your life where you’re both sinking in to the familiar AND stretching yourself in new directions.

Are you in tune with your needs?

Because if you’re not, you’ll just keep criticizing yourself and demanding things of yourself in an extrinsically motivated fashion, rather than one built on intrinsic motivation and self-interest.

So.

The point is, let go of “the comfort zone is bad” and “leaving my comfort zone is good” type beliefs.

There is no good vs. bad! Just cause and effect for every choice you make

Will you get your needs met for both comfort and challenge? Will you build a flourishing life?

Remove Mental Blocks

But do you also have subconscious weeds in your garden?

Deep down do you believe…

“Failure isn’t safe….”
“I’m not confident enough….”
“I’m not enough.”

If you concluded these as a child, like many of us did growing up in school, then you may be trying to drive with the emergency brake on!

Good news is…I can help.

I can prune your weeds. In my coaching, I can remove “I’m not enough” or any other subconscious belief from your mind.
