Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, is famously quoted as saying, “Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.”

A personal brand is an identity you create for yourself online. And if you aren’t effectively managing your online reputation, then you run the risk of losing out on business.

To help us better understand the branding equation, Sidekick spoke with two experts: Katie Gatti of Morning Brew’s own Money with Katie and Greg Monaco, the branding brain behind Monaco Branding and Creative. They shared these tips:

Here are some key takeaways from the blog “Everything you need to know about building a personal brand”:

  1. Ask yourself some deep, soul-searching questions.
Start by asking yourself how you want people to feel about you when you aren’t there. This provides clarity on where you should start in developing your personal brand.
  2. Stick to your social strategy
Create a manageable social media system and stick consistently to it.
  3. Be your authentic self
Avoid overconsumption of other people’s content and make your brand the most authentic version of the best version of you.
  4. Avoid comparison
Stop mentally ranking yourself with respect to others’ achievements, their skills, the accolades they’ve gotten, or their job title. Your resume and your timeline of experiences are not your personal brand.
  5. Your brand is your reputation.
Your personal brand is the reputation that nobody can take from you. It portrays the values that make you who you are.

A powerful excerpt from the blog:

“For women in particular, in the workplace, your name is the one thing they cannot take away from you. Think about it as your reputation instead of your personal brand. Whether you’re a go-getter, you’re smart, you’re calm in conflict, or you always come to the table with solutions—your name precedes you.”
